Making Portrait Milano part of the city, not just a place to stay

Milan did not need another generic hotel opening. ASA built the UK launch around Portrait Milano’s defining idea: a restored seminary and historic piazza returning to the social and cultural life of the city.

Portrait Milano Terrace

The property and moment

Portrait Milano opened in late 2022 inside a restored 16th-century seminary in Milan’s fashion district. The architecture and location gave the hotel immediate presence, but Milan remains a city which is not top on the UK's travel lists.

The opportunity here was larger than a new place to stay. The central courtyard had reopened as a public piazza, with food, design, fashion, culture and social life gathered around it. That gave the launch a role in the city as well as in the hotel market. The launch coincided with the end of the COVID pandemic and an opportunity for Milan to present itself in a different light.

AGREED AIM

Establish Portrait Milano as a distinctive new Milan hotel and secure relevant UK attention among luxury travel, design, fashion and cultural audiences. Agreed in 2022.

CONDITIONS

The opening entered a competitive hotel market. Its strongest asset was the public piazza, so the story had to reach beyond conventional hotel-launch language.

The case we made

Central to ASA's communication was Portrait Milano as a piazza for the city: open not only to hotel guests, but to Milan’s wider cultural and social scene. The position connected the building’s history with its new public use and gave editors a reason to consider the hotel through architecture, design, fashion, food and city life.

That breadth mattered. It created several editorial routes without losing the central argument that Portrait Milano was a destination within Milan, rather than simply accommodation at its centre.

What ASA did

ASA developed the UK launch strategy, positioning and media narrative. We created tailored stories around the architecture, Milanese heritage, interiors, food and cultural programme, then worked with relevant travel, design, fashion and lifestyle media.

The programme included individual press visits, launch materials, creative ideas for the piazza and opportunities involving aligned publications, brands and cultural partners. Portrait Milano provided access to the hotel and supported visits, events and activations.

IN HOUSE / PARTNERS

ASA led UK strategy, positioning, stories, media relations, visits and collaboration ideas. The hotel provided access, programming and the setting in which they happened.

REVIEWED

The launch brief was not formally reviewed.

What happened

Coverage reached beyond hotel and travel pages. The Financial Times and Condé Nast Traveller introduced the opening through the seminary and new piazza. The Standard reviewed the hotel for a London audience, while later PORT and Escapism features developed the architecture and longevity stories. These are just a handful of examples.

The breadth of those placements reflects the position ASA set out to build: a hotel connected to Milan’s design, fashion, food, wellness and cultural life.

CONTRIBUTION

ASA developed the UK launch narrative, media stories and visits. The building, piazza, location and hotel programme supplied the substance.

What came next

The piazza remained a useful communications platform after the opening. Dining, design, fashion, wellness, events and cultural partnerships could all develop the same idea rather than compete as separate hotel messages.

A launch earns attention when it gives people a new way to understand the place.
