Turning practice into a sustainability story for Borgo Pignano

Borgo Pignano had spent years putting regenerative principles into practice. ASA’s task was to make those connected decisions clear without reducing them to a list of sustainability claims.

The property and moment

Borgo Pignano’s approach reaches across the estate: agriculture, water, energy, waste, biodiversity and the use of resources. The substance already existed. What was missing was a single account of how those practices belonged together and what they said about the estate.

The work began in 2025, as the business prepared for a more formal phase of sustainability reporting. The immediate need was a public narrative that guests, partners and other stakeholders could understand. It also had to remain useful as the work developed.

AGREED AIM

Create one credible sustainability narrative for Borgo Pignano Volterra and a clear foundation for future reporting and communications. Agreed in 2025.

CONDITIONS

The estate’s work spans several operational systems. The story had to connect them without simplifying the detail or making claims beyond the evidence.

The case we made

Sustainability at Borgo Pignano is not a separate initiative. It is part of the way the estate is run. That became the organising idea: stewardship and regeneration as a working philosophy, rather than an additional hospitality feature.

From there, individual practices could be understood as parts of the same system. Rainwater harvesting and natural irrigation swales sat alongside greywater phytoremediation, composting, recycling, renewable energy and heritage-variety agriculture. The detail gave the wider argument its credibility.

What ASA did

ASA reviewed and structured the information already held across the estate, then developed the narrative, messages and Sustainability Manifesto. The work translated operational detail into language that remained specific while being clear enough for a guest-facing audience.

We then wrote the content for a dedicated sustainability webpage and created a framework that could extend to future properties. The material was structured so it could support later reporting and certification communications without presenting ASA as the auditor or certifying body.

IN HOUSE / PARTNERS

ASA developed the narrative, manifesto, messages and website content. Borgo Pignano supplied the operational evidence and estate knowledge.

NOT INCLUDED

Independent environmental auditing, certification and verification of the estate’s underlying sustainability claims were outside ASA’s remit.

What happened

The result was a Sustainability Manifesto and a dedicated public account of the estate’s approach. Practices that had previously sat across different operational areas could now be explained through one coherent idea.

The work also created a common language for future reporting, media relations and guest communications. No quantified environmental or commercial outcome formed part of this phase, so none is claimed here.

CONTRIBUTION

ASA organised existing evidence and wrote the narrative. Its credibility rests on Borgo Pignano’s operational practices and long-term environmental work.

What came next

The manifesto and webpage provide a reference point for the next stage of Borgo Pignano’s sustainability communications. New initiatives and reporting can be added to the same structure without rebuilding the story each time.
